Era la primera vez que actuábamos en el viejo Pabellón del Real Madrid, y para mí era un día de especial trascendencia. Al atravesar la puerta sentí cómo toda la historia del baloncesto español se apoderaba de mí.Tras recorrer todos y cada uno de los pasillos del local, llegué hasta ese añejo vestuario donde jugué a imaginar el lugar que ocuparían cada uno de mis héroes de adolescente. Pensé en ese mudo testigo de los buenos y malos momentos que es el vestuario, al tiempo que un enorme respeto me invadió momentos antes de salir al escenario.

Al concluir y descender feliz y sudando, volví a sentir la misma sensación y noté que alguien me agarraba ligeramente del brazo; me giré y ví a un muchacho que, titubeante, me dió su mano mientras me decía: «Tus conciertos son como los rebotes de Fernando Martín». Creo que nunca me han dicho nada tan significativo ni hermoso en la vida.

El ‘rock’ y el baloncesto

Tres años después de aquello recibí una llamada de este periódico por si, debido a mi vínculo durante largo tiempo con el baloncesto, me gustaría realizar alguna colaboración. .

Recibí encantado la noticia, ya que para mí el rock-and-roll y el baloncesto siempre han estado muy ligados, y, le pedí a mi amigo Luis un favor: poder entrevistarte, como un fan más, como el espejo que eres de muchos jóvenes que, basándose en la superación y el trabajo personal, quieren llegar a lo más alto; con esa altivez que tú siempre has mantenido en los peores momentos, seguro de lo que hacías, representando como nadie el valor, la furia y el coraje del jugador español.

Muchos pensábamos en el día en que por fin volverías a jugar en la selección española; qué deleite volver a verte luchar bajo los aros contra los clásicos pivots yugoslavos e italianos, lanzando ese codo amenazador que hacíamos todos un poco nuestro.

Porque, Fernando, no voy a engañarte, todos nos hemos sentido reflejados en tí en algún momento.

Ahora vuelvo a sentirme como la primera vez que entré en el viejo pabellón y pienso en tantas cosas que no sé cómo continuar. Conocí tu marcha en Barcelona, y me quedé helado.

Espero que alguien te pase esta carta, que es el apunte de una entrevista que no se llegará a hacer, mientras las imágenes de un James Dean que, como tú, vivió muy rápido, atraviesan mi cerebro; mientras mi corazón y el de quienes te quisimos sin que tú lo supieras seguirán marcados por el día en que una parte del baloncesto murió para nosotros.

Ahora suena un viejo rock-and-roll de Eddie Cochran, un rock-and-roll tan chulo y tan rebelde como tú.
